Senator Jackie Speier was one of the speakers. In 1994 her husband was killed by a red light runner. Speier currently has a bill in the Assembly that would toughen restrictions on newly licensed teen drivers. She says it would also make parents more accountable.
"Parents need to be on notice, that if they knowingly allow their child to drive a vehicle while they have a provisional license either after hours or with other young people in the vehicle that they can be held liable as well. And this is all about saving the next young person’s life."
Organizers of Wednesday’s “Save Someone You Love Day” rally say August is the worst month for automobile-related deaths nationwide and that teenagers account for the highest percentage of speed-related accidents.
