Counterterrorism officials are investigating the possibility that an attack may have been planned by members of a militant Islamic gang at the Folsom prison called Jamiyyat Ul Islam Is Saheeh or JIS.

State Department of Corrections Secretary Roderick Hickman says it’s just one of many prison gangs. "JIS and many other disruptive groups have been ongoing entities within the institutions of California."

Officials say they can’t comment specifically on the current investigation but California’s Director of Homeland Security – Matt Bettenhausen – says generally speaking, prisons have become a breeding ground for extremists. "We have to continue to worry about those things. The idea of terrorism recruitment and radicalization in prisons is nothing new and continues."

The alleged plot may have included attacks on various targets in Los Angeles.
