The Communicare Centers throughout Yolo County have laid off 25 staff members, due to inadequate funding. Their clinics have been the safety net for the poor for a third of a century, but they can’t cobble together a funding solution this time.

The county and Sutter Davis Hospital both say they lack funds for a bailout. A California Endowment grant is ending. And Medicaid reimbursement is paltry.

The Davis-based organization logged 81,000 visits last year. Some will presumably look to emergency rooms for treatment, the traditional last resort.
