Illegal fireworks cause most of the fires and injuries that occur on the Fourth of July, according to Shawn Ehrenburg of the Stanislaus County Consolidated Fire Protection District.

"At the end of the day they're responsible for 95 percent of all fires started at homes."

In recent weeks a multi-agency undercover task force has been searching the county, looking for illegal fireworks.

"They're in the process of rolling out with the sheriff's department as well as local police agencies to thwart any use of illegal fireworks. And just in one portion of the county they confiscated over forty pounds of illegal fireworks."

Investigators have found that many of the confiscated combustibles have been imported from Pacific Rim countries or purchased over the Internet from unknown sources.
Those caught will illegal fireworks could receive jail sentences.
