Officials in Merced were expecting West Nile Virus to arrive early and it did. Now that multiple cases of the potentially deadly disease have been detected near Livingston, a warning has been issued.
Allan Inman is the Director of the Mosquito Abatement District.
" We issued a mosquito warning in response to finding three positive pools of mosquitoes in the Livingston area on Foster Farms property."
The warning means residents should be especially careful in areas where the insects are the most prominent.
Inman is also concerned about money to spray breeding grounds. He says the two million dollars budgeted for abatement is nearly exhausted.
"So basically our reserves have dwindled down to just about nothing."
Inman says he expects to get a new infusion of money from the local government as residents pay their property taxes and he's hoping there will be money in the state budget for abatement.
