Lawyers for Hamid and Umer Hayat entered not guilty pleas for their clients. The father and son are being held in Sacramento County Jail without bond, charged with lying to the FBI about terrorist ties.
Johnny Griffin the Third, represents the father, Umer Hayat. He notes the pair have only been charged with lying. He predicts terrorism charges will not materialize.
"I believe that what the government will find that what they thought they may have had, they don't have."
Griffin didn't elaborate, but did indicate he's going to ask the court to dismiss the case.
"At the appropriate time I will file the appropriate pleadings to urge the court to dump this matter quite frankly. "
A discovery hearing is scheduled for this Friday. At that time the government could disclose additional evidence in the case against the Hayats. However prosecutors could ask the court to allow them to withhold some or all of their evidence for national security reasons.
