Barnhill died over the Memorial Day weekend when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb north of Baghdad. The 39 year old First Sergeant is survived by his widow and three children. Several hundred people were at Tuesday’s services at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, including Kevin Johnson. "Very sad day for the whole community."

Johnson works at Pershing Elementary School which all three of Barnhill’s children have attended. "Yeah, it’s very hard, very hard. He was really involved with the school, really involved with the children."

Barnhill was also active in the Orangevale Youth Soccer Club as a coach and on its governing board. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq and was assigned to the 6th Engineer Support Battalion.

Barnhill joined the Marines after graduating from Folsom High School 20-years ago. He also worked as a correctional officer at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione.
