California has 278 state parks— and while residents may have their favorite one or two, the state Department of Parks and Recreation is hoping they’ll find a few more.

The California State Parks Foundation is funding ads to highlight the diversity in the parks system.  Foundation President Elizabeth Goldstein says focus groups revealed Californians have only scratched the surface when it comes to the state parks.

“People knew about parks they used but it was a very limited number of parks and they didn’t realize it was just a very tiny part of the vast resource.”

After launching the new campaign, parks department and foundation members took a train ride through historic Old Sacramento that’s featured in one of the print ads.
