The Pentagon list calls for 12 California base closures with a total loss of two thousand jobs.  Former congressman Leon Panetta of Monterey is co-chairman of Governor Schwarzenegger’s Council on Base Support and Retention.  Panetta says California could have done much worse.

"I think we've gotta continue to be vigilant, because we're gonna face some threats from some of the other bases that are being closed in other parts of the country."

Panetta says the federal Base Closure and Realignment Commission can still modify the Pentagon’s list.  Republican State Senator Roy Ashburn says California must be ready to defend its bases against other states.

"If it means badmouthing California or drawing comparisons that are not unflattering for out state, I think they're gonna do it"

The Base Closure Commission will present its final list to the President in September.  It then goes to Congress for an up or down vote.
