Dubbed Operation Apple Shield, the training exercise will test the response of local emergency workers to a large-scale health disaster.
Deputy Health Officer Doctor Karen Tait says they’ve never held such a massive exercise before. “This is certainly the largest one that we have done.”
She says health workers will set up a huge health clinic at Cal Expo and dispense mock antibiotics to about 1,000 volunteers. “If we had a large public health threat to the whole community or to a large number of people in the community, we would set this kind of center up for efficiency.”
And Tait says they still need volunteers to role play as patients exposed to life-threatening biological agents. Volunteers can register by calling the County Public Health Department at (916) 875-0400.
