Yolo County Clerk-Recorder Freddie Oakley says she faces a real dilemma in putting on a special election.

“ I don’t have any money to pay for it, and Yolo County is broke.”

Spokeswoman Caren Daniels-Meade says cost tops the list of concerns for local registrars and that Secretary of State Bruce McPherson will encourage the Governor to provide funding for a statewide election this year.

“And he has noted that there is indeed a precedent that Governor Wilson included funding in his special election proclamation in 1993.”

A spokesman for the Department of Finance says discussion of state funding is premature, as a special election has not yet been called. As for Oakley—she says if an election is called, there will be one in Yolo County—but she may step aside this time and let someone else run it.
