Thursday’s arrest of nine suspects came after a two-month investigation that led Fish and Game officers to North Highlands. “The main player had an auto body shop in North Highlands and was processing caviar and then sending it up to San Francisco.”

Department spokesman Steve Martarano says the processed sturgeon was sold for up to $240 a pound. He says poaching from the Delta is increasing. “There’s a real problem out there and we’re not going to stand for this kind of activity.”

This is the second major sturgeon poaching operation conducted by the department in the last two years.
