The noon time ceremony was at the Sacramento Police and Sheriff’s Memorial on Arden Way. Speakers included State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Sheriff Lou Blanas and Police Chief Albert Najera. “I think every speaker that has stood up here has said ‘never forget,’ but that is so incredibly important to the families of the officers that are enshrined here.”
The memorial, which opened about three years ago, features a series of small columns representing 27 local officers who were killed over the past 150-years. Sheriff Blanas said the memorial is an emotional site. “We pray and hope that we never add another officer to this memorial.”
A rose was placed at each officer’s column followed by a 21-gun salute. The ceremony marked the start of Law Enforcement Memorial Week in Sacramento.
