CalTrans Director Will Kempton says inspectors chosen by the Federal Highway Administration are getting ready to remove chunks of the eastern span of the Bay Bridge that’s under construction.

“We’re also looking at doing some testing that will involve taking pieces of the welds out of the piles and sending them to Washington State for further inspection.”

The State Attorney General’s office is also looking into the welding that’s been called into question by former workers on the project.

Kempton says they still have not worked out exactly who will pay for the inspection, between Caltrans and the contractor,  but he says it won’t be cheap. As for the project, Kempton says construction work continues—but concrete pouring and welding have been stopped.
