State Orders Halt To Logging
State water officials have ordered Pacific Lumber Company to temporarily stop logging in Humboldt County.

The decision by the state Water Resources Control Board comes after environmentalists filed a petition questioning the validity of the company's timber harvest plans. That suspends logging in parts of the Freshwater Creek and Elk River watersheds near Eureka. The board's action prevents Pacific Lumber from logging there until the board can hold a hearing on the environmental groups' petition. No hearing date has been set. Lumber company officials say they’ll appeal the board’s decision.
