Supporters say the new online registry spells out an organ donor’s wishes and is a big improvement over the pink dot on a driver’s license. 30-year-old Christy Pimental is awaiting a kidney transplant and hopes the new registry will encourage more people to give.
“Because of hereditary diabetes and high blood pressure, I cannot receive an organ from a family member, so in order for me to have a future, which at this point I don’t have one right now, I need a complete and total stranger to give the gift of life and be an organ donor.”
The process to create a statewide registry was slowed amid state budget problems. Legislation allowed for a non-profit agency to take over and fund the effort. Californians can register on line at donatelifeCalifornia.org.
