In statements, the Governor and legislative leaders expressed admiration for various aspects of the Pope’s life and work. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he and first Lady Maria Shriver as Catholics admired Pope John Paul the Second’s leadership and that their meeting many years ago in Rome remains a highlight of their lives.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez said the late Pontiff embodied the essence of faith and forgiveness even through his fight with Parkinson’s disease.  Assembly Republican leader Kevin McCarthy noted the Pope’s work to liberate the people of his native Poland from Communism.  Flags at the Capitol and state buildings will fly at half-staff in honor of Pope John Paul the Second until sunset on the day of his burial.
