Department officials say they’re reaching out to local African American, Asian and other communities to recruit new officers.

"Sacramento is very diversified with different ethnic groups and so we kind of wanted to match our Police Department to the community." Officer Michelle Lazark, a department spokeswoman, says they’ve developed a Community Recruiter Program. "We’re teaching community leaders whether it be neighborhood associations, clubs, churches or businesses in the Sacramento area, to seek out candidates."

The three-hour training program outlines the selection, testing, and training process for police recruits. Many of the candidates who become officers will be assigned to patrol in the communities that recruited them.
