At the state Capitol, Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno of San Francisco said the decision vindicates the actions of San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, who last year authorized hundreds of same sex marriages.
This is great news. Every decision that we can have which underscores that all Californians and all families and all children in California should have the same and equal protection under the law, that's good news and, of course, comes as no surprise to us.
The judge's decision will be appealed and gay marriage opponents are expected to propose another initiative to enact a constitutional ban on gay marriage, similar to the bans enacted by voters in thirteen states last year.
Leno has his own bill that would change state law to read that marriage is a union between two persons, not just between a man and a woman.
