Doris Matsui received about seventy percent of the votes to defeat eleven other candidates vying for California’s fifth district seat in the House of Representatives. The post became vacant in January when long-time Congressman Robert Matsui died.
While addressing her supporters last night, Representative-elect Doris Matsui expressed mixed emotions about the victory. “We wish there didn’t have to be an election. And we wish we didn’t have to choose a new person to be our champion in the halls of Congress. But that was not to be.”
The turnout for the election was light. Less than a quarter of the 300-thousand who were eligible cast a ballot.
Doris Matsui is expected to be sworn-in to office tomorrow in Washington.
