State Controller Steve Westly and Board of Equalization Chairman John Chiang (Chung) launched the amnesty, and the ad campaign to promote it. CUT: Ad24 (fade) 06 Westly said why a taxpayer didn’t pay is not important. CUT: Westly14 :14 The amnesty applies to any income, franchise, sales, or use tax unpaid or unreported prior to 2003. Back taxes and interest are still owed, but penalties are waived if past-due filers settle up by March 31st. Westly says California’s last tax amnesty was 21 years ago. He expects the state to reap about 600 million dollars it would otherwise not collect. SOC MORE INFORMATION ON TAX AMNESTY AT www.taxes.ca.gov
