SMUD Campaigning to Take Over PG&E Territory in Yolo County
PG&E spoke out Friday in what's becoming a fierce fight over which utility will serve parts of Yolo County in the future.

A vote of the people is likely in 2006 in eastern Yolo County, including Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento. 85,000 customers will decided if they want the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to replace PG&E as their power provider of the future. A recent consultants’ study for SMUD estimated an average decrease of 8% in electricity rates, if SMUD took over. Now PG&E is saying the study is flawed. PG&E says their power poles, wires and substations are worthy $400 million more than the consultant’s figure. Tens of millions of other extra costs are also put forward. One thing is undisputed. Both utilities are now engaged in what could be a prolonged campaign.
