More than three thousand people, including about a thousand police officers, and emergency service personnel from across California gathered at Modesto’s First Baptist Church to honor Sergeant Stevenson. The 39-year old officer is the first member of the Ceres Police Department to die in the line of duty. Ceres Police Chief Art DeWerk concluded an emotional eulogy with a personal tribute to the slain officer. DEWERK :20—And to Howie, secure your gun and hang up your duty belt. You have made the ultimate sacrifice as a hero. Dying in the service of your fellow man, you have done all you can. You are cleared for the end of watch. Thank you and God bless you all. Following the service at the church, a funeral procession with hundreds of patrol cars, motorcycles, and fire trucks made the trip to Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, where Stevenson was laid to rest.
