Governor Proposes Teacher Merit Pay System
California's Education Secretary is providing more details on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s State of the State proposal for a new teacher merit pay system.

Secretary for Education Richard Riordan (REAR-dun) says it would be up to school districts to determine the criteria for merit pay raises—something he says could come through the collective bargaining process. Riordan says other states have implemented similar programs to obtain results. Cut: RichR (:15) “But the feeling, the strong feeling of the Governor is we have to hold people responsible for how they teach kids.. and we have to be, we will be the leader in this area when we make this happen.” Several Democratic lawmakers were quick to criticize the Governor’s plan, saying it unfairly lays blame on teachers for students’ failure rates on standardized tests. The legislature will take up the issue in a special session called by the Governor. SOC
