California Farm Bureau to Strongly Support Biotechnology
The California Farm Bureau Wednesday took a stronger stand for biotechnology as it affects agriculture.

At the bureau’s annual meeting, a policy change was adopted. It says the organization will support and protect the use and development of biotechnology, a stronger position than in the past. Safety and good science should be taken into account as well, according to the Bureau, which represents 89,000 farmers statewide. Delegates voted to oppose local efforts by cities and counties to establish their own policies, often prompted by concerns about genetically altered crops. In November, three California counties passed initiatives imposing bans in this area … and three counties rejected such initiatives. It promises to be a continuing flashpoint … with the Bureau now taking a firmer position.
