Administrators at U-C Merced say they expect to receive about 65-thousand applications for the one thousand available positions in next fall’s inaugural undergraduate class. Admissions Director Encarnacion Ruiz anticipates the Central Valley region will be well represented. RUIZ :08—It would be nice to have about 50 percent of those to come from this region and that would be mix of transfer students and first-time freshmen. High school guidance counselors and administrators like Sylvia Smith of the Merced Union High School District, say many of the region’s ‘best and the brightest’ students are applying to U-C Merced. SMITH :09—Students from Fresno, Modesto, as far away as Bakersfield, Sacramento, up and down the Central Valley have an interest in this new university. Ruiz says students who are accepted will be notified next March. U-C Merced is the first major American research university built in the 21st century. Bob Hensley KXJZ News.
