Paid Family Leave Claims Processing Improves
State officials say a backlog of applications for the first-in-the-nation paid family leave program has been eliminated, they say it’s proving popular with parents.

State Employment Development Department spokeswoman Suzanne Schroeder says the computer problems that plagued the new Family Leave program in July have been sorted out… Now she says claims are being processed within a week or two, rather than the previous month-long wait. Schroeder says new parents are applying for the benefits in large numbers. Cut: SS1 (:17) “Over 90-percent of the claims that have come in have been bonding with a newborn, it can be an adoption, it can be a foster child. What it has to be is within the first year you have that child.” The employee-funded program provides partial payment through state Disability insurance to California workers while they take time to care for a child or sick family member.
