Stanislaus County Ranked Highest in Auto Theft
Motor vehicle thefts are reaching epidemic levels in Stanislaus County. But law enforcement officials say they’re not surprised the area leads the nation in stolen cars and trucks.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau says Modesto/Stanislaus County surpassed Phoenix last year with the highest per capita stolen car rate in the country. There were more than 13-hundred reported thefts for every 100-thousand people in 2003. Local law enforcement officials say they’ve watched auto theft rates skyrocket in a short time. Modesto ranked 12th on the N-I-C-B’s list in 2001. Lieutenant Gregory Peck heads a stolen vehicle task force in Stanislaus County. PECK :08—The majority of thefts that we have here are people stealing the car to use it for transportation or to sell it to buy drugs. Lieutenant Peck says there’s no indication that a sophisticated theft ring is operating in the area. Early 19-90’s Hondas, Toyota’s and Chevrolet pickup trucks are the favorite targets because their ignition systems are easy to defeat. Bob Hensley KXJZ News.
