The AP’s projection was made about one thirty this morning, five and a half hours after the polls officially closed. At the time Machado held a 53 to 47 percent margin over Podesto with just over 80 percent of the vote tabulated in the district that includes Yolo, most of San Joaquin, and parts of Solano, and Sacramento counties. When contacted a spokesman said the Podesto campaign wouldn’t have anything to say about the race until later this morning. Machado was cautious when responding to the AP’s projection because all of San Joaquin County’s votes hadn’t been counted and the Registrar said they wouldn’t be finished until later today. MACHADO :05—My opponent has not conceded and under the circumstances, we’re cautiously optimistic. Machado said he would have more to say later this morning. It’s taking longer to tabulate the votes in San Joaquin County mainly because more of the district’s precincts are located there than the other counties combined. To be official, the fifth district race must be certified by the Secretary of State. Bob Hensley KXJZ News.
