Democrat incumbent Mike Machado and Republican challenger Gary Podesto will square off in a debate on the campus of University of the Pacific this evening. The candidates are locked in one of the most contentious and costly state senate races in memory. The seating capacity of the concert hall where the debate takes place holds as many as 900 people. But Stanislaus State University Political Science Professor Larry Giventer, says the candidates will be mainly concerned about how the event is covered by the media. GIVENTER :09—Both candidates are going to speak to that audience, not the audience in the room, but the reporters who are in the room who will interpreter what happened. Podesto and Machado will be answering questions from a six-member panel of journalists and academics. The fifth district includes portions of four counties including Sacramento and San Joaquin.
