HMO's Lacking in Non-English Language Services
A new study says most Sacramento area health maintenance organizations do a poor job of providing language services to people who don’t speak English.

The state office of the patient advocate points out that 40% of Californians speak a language other than English at home … and if they don’t fully understand what a doctor or nurse is saying, it can be a real problem. Standouts on language services in the Sacramento region are Molina Healthcare and Partnership Health Plan. Kaiser Permanente is average. Blue Cross, Health Net and Pacificare are sub-par, and Blue Shield and Western Health Advantage didn’t participate in the study. The goal is to assure that cultural and language differences disappear as obstacles to good healthcare.
