The Oakland Athletics major league baseball team has announced that their single “A” franchise in Modesto is moving to Stockton. The team will become the Stockton Ports when the California League season opens next April in a new stadium on the waterfront. A spokesman for the Oakland Athletics cited the new facility in Stockton as the main reason for the change. Meanwhile Modesto A’s General Manager Mike Gorrasi says the city will continue to have minor league baseball. GORRASI :07—We are guaranteed a major league affiliate. There are several teams that would like to come into Modesto. They’ve heard about our community and our fans. Gorrasi says a decision on which major league franchise will be the parent club to the Modesto team will be revealed soon. Gorrasi acknowledged that the Texas Rangers is one of the teams he’s talked to about coming to Modesto. Texas was the parent club of the Stockton Ports. He says the new team will no longer be called the “A’s”, adding next week the team will launch a campaign soliciting suggestions for a new name from the public. Bob Hensley KXJZ News.
