The suit filed by the Privacy Clearing House in San Diego Superior Court says the pharmacy’s customers often receive letters and phone calls that seem like reminders from a local pharmacist. Customers are encouraged to renew their prescriptions or consider an alternative drug. Actually the contact comes from drug companies, the suit charges, using a customer data base illegally sold to them by Albertson’s. The supermarket chain flatly denies the charge. The Clearinghouse says it will expand their legal initiative to other chain pharmacies. Senate Bill 1633, now on the Governor’s desk, would require patient consent to make this a legal practice.
