Security precautions on Folsom Dam Road are causing some nearby businesses to suffer.

When the Bureau of Reclamation closed Folsom Dam Road last year, a safety move in an age of terroism, Granite Bay Jewelers lost a third of its business. And, business hasn’t recovered … so while the store remains open, its owner has just filed to reorganize in bankruptcy court. The road closure had already forced a family-owned Italian market called Mama Ann’s to close up and relocate to El Dorado Hills. Several shops on historic Sutter Street have shuttered their doors … and the owner of an antique clock store says his walk-in traffic has dropped 80%. The Bureau of Reclamation says it won’t reopen Folsom Dam Road until next March, at the earliest, as it studies long-term options.
