California Will be Affected by Assault Weapon Ban Expiration

Even if, as expected, Congress does not renew the federal law, California’s tough assault weapons ban will remain in force. But Hallye (HAL eee) Jordan, spokeswoman for state Attorney General Bill Lockyer, says California will be affected. CUT: Jordan11 :11 The federal law currently bans 19 specific assault weapons, while California’s law bans generically defined firearms that have at least one characteristic of an assault weapon. President Bush has said he supports extension of the federal ban, but has not actively pressured Congress. Critics say Bush is unwilling to cross the powerful National Rifle Association, which has always opposed the ban. SOC
