The state Senate’s select Committee on California Prisons Wednesday took its first look at reforms proposed in July by an independent review panel.

The Senate Committee’s chairwoman Gloria Romero said the panel, appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger and chaired by former governor George Deukmejian, offered 239 specific recommendations. Romero said her special focus is the troubled California Youth Authority.
