Officials say the fire that destroyed 22 homes in the town of French Gulch and sent some three hundred residents fleeing originated near a road about two miles south of the Shasta County community. Department of Forestry Investigator, Chris Newton says the incident is being treated as a criminal matter and that three possibilities are being explored. Because it’s a criminal investigation Newton says he’s not at liberty to discuss any physical evidence discovered at the point where the fire is believed to have started. The evacuees have returned to their homes and the three thousand firefighters on the scene have contained 50 percent of the blaze.
