Governor Schwarzenegger is asking the legislature to let Bay Area counties vote in November on whether to divert a dollar from the existing three dollar bridge toll to pay for the seismic retrofit. The state Senate’s Republican leader Dick Ackerman says a flat functional bridge would be quicker and cheaper to build than proposed suspension bridge. Ackerman08 :08 Bay Area lawmakers say they’ll fight the governor’s plan, although Senate leader John Burton of San Francisco says raising the Bay Bridge toll from three to four dollars may be needed to pay both for the seismic retrofit and other pressing Bay Area transportation projects. SOC Lawmakers hope to act upon the Bay Bridge funding issue before the August 31 final legislative recess. SOC
