Commissioner Poizner says there’s a Web site that helps you find what insurance you can qualify for.
Phil Lebherz is the founder of the Foundation for Health Coverage Education, which runs the site. He says often people don’t even know about their options.
“Of the seven million uninsured about two-million-one-hundred thousand are actually eligible for some of form of subsidized or free health insurance in California but they’re not signed up.”
The site has details about public health programs like Medi-Cal as well as private insurance. It also has information about COBRA. That’s the program that lets laid-off workers keep their employer based health benefits for the short-term.
