The survey asked Californians between the ages of 16 and 34 about their career interests. Independent firm Goodwin Simon Victoria Research conducted the survey. According to partner Amy Simon, respondents were more interested in health care positions like pharmacy technician, emergency medical technician or medical assistant than jobs like bank teller, retail clerk or bartender. 
 
“By far respondents considered the health care sector to be the most likely place to find a good paying job with benefits, so 80 percent of respondents say it’s likely that people can find a good job in the health care industry.” 
 
But California Hospital Association spokeswoman Jan Emerson says state cuts to community colleges are slowing training for these jobs.

“There is not the educational capacity in the schools here in California to educate all the people who are actually interested in going into health care professions.” 
 
Emerson also says the economic crisis is hitting hospitals and some might not be hiring. All of this is happening at a time when California’s health care system is under more stress than ever from a growing and aging population. The California Wellness Foundation funded the telephone survey that polled more than 700 people.
