The measure will go into effect in 2015.  It will require egg-laying hens, pregnant pigs and veal calves to have enough room in their cages to lie down, turn around and spread their wings. The measure will have the biggest effect on California’s egg industry.  Peter Brandt is a Senior Attorney with the Humane Society of the United States and a spokesman for the Yes on 2 campaign. He says the success shows voters care about the treatment of animals raised for food.

“When Californians are confronted with how their food is produced, they are going to demand that animals be treated humanely…”

Critics say it will drive egg producers out of state. California Chamber of Commerce President Alan Zaremberg says it will have a direct impact on businesses.

“Well I can tell you that it will be very important to egg producers that are not going to be in business and their families and their workers.”

Supporters of the measure say they’ll push for similar measures in other states.
