The event is part of the annual statewide Coastal Cleanup Day. Volunteers pick up everything from old fishing lines to used mattresses. Dianna Aguilar heads the American River Parkway Foundation. She says volunteers do it to make a difference.  

"They want to maintain the beauty of the parkway. They want to maintain the wildlife that comes out onto the parkway. So they’re doing it because they enjoy it. Some are doing it for community service and to give back to the community – the whole point of volunteering." 

Aguilar says last year, volunteers picked up 20,000 pounds of trash. This year, the goal is 25,000.

The cleanup is Saturday from 9 AM to Noon. Volunteers can show up at any of the 18 cleanup sites along the parkway…including Discovery Park, Paradise Beach and Ancil Hoffman Park.
