Of the 13 people on the helicopter from Oregon to the Shasta Trinity National Forest, only one of the pilots and three fire fighters appear to have survived.  Co-pilot Bill Coultas went through three-and-a-half hours of surgery Thursday.  Dr. Tina Palmieri says he’s in critical but stable condition.

Palmieri: “He sustained burns to about a third of his body, and they are both second- and third-degree burns.”

The other two patients are fire fighters Michael Brown and Jonathan Frohreich.  Dr. John Anderson says they’re both in good condition.

Anderson: “Mike’s burns are mostly to the face and he has multiple fractures to the face.  Jonathan has burns again to the face – and then the compression fractures are to his lower back.”

A fourth survivor is being treated at a hospital in Redding.
