It looks like parents who let their kids swim in Sacramento County rivers – without a life jacket on – will soon be facing misdemeanor charges.

Sacramento County Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved the idea of an ordinance requiring kids 12-and-under to wear life jackets when in public waterways. It’s designed to prevent drownings. In the past year there have been a total of eight drownings in local rivers. The proposed ordinance will be presented for final adoption on June 10th…and if approved…will become effective immediately. The maximum penalty under the ordinance would be a fine of 500-dollars or six months in jail…or both. The City of Sacramento is expected to consider a similar ordinance.
