Rancho Cordova officials are considering relaxing developers’ responsibility to offset the environmental impacts of new projects. The city planning commission voted March 13 in support of amending the natural resources section of the city’s general plan, its blueprint for growth through the year 2050. The new language waters down rules that protect wildlife habitat by adding the qualifier “where feasible” to requirements for interconnected habitat, restrictions on roads through wildlife reserves and other development limitations. Also, economic and social factors would be considered when determining how feasible something is. Environmentalists say the revised language allows too much wiggle room for developers. The City Council might consider approving the amendments at its April 21 meeting.
