Even before he won Florida, John McCain had a solid lead in statewide polls.  Professor Jack Pitney of Claremont McKenna College says Mitt Romney’s best chance is to target McCain’s more moderate stance on immigration.
 
Pitney: “So I’d expect him to hit that issue very hard in his advertising and his free media.  It may be the wedge that enables him to pry off enough Republican voters to make it competitive.”
 
A quirk in the process of awarding delegates could give Mitt Romney an opening.  Under state party rules, candidates win three delegates for each congressional district they carry.  Pitney says Romney is hoping to use his personal wealth to target strong Democratic districts – hoping to win the votes of the limited number of Republicans in those areas.
