Placer County’s population is expected to double over the next 30-years. Transportation officials say they need to set up a funding structure to pay for future road expansion.
"We have a long list of transportation needs that we see coming over the next 30-years and we don’t have the money to address them."
Celia McAdam heads the Placer County Transportation Planning Agency. She says a half-cent sales tax would raise more than $1 billion. But polls commissioned by the county indicate that voter support is low. McAdam says that’s because of recent road improvements.
"I think people are seeing what’s happening right this second in their commute and reacting to that and saying ‘things aren’t so bad.’"
This Thursday, the transportation planning agency board will decide whether to put the sales tax on the ballot.
"I as one commissioner will be voting to postpone it."
Kathy Lund – who is also the Mayor of Rocklin – says it’s too early to put the issue on the ballot.
"I propose that we go out and do outreach programs to educate the public."
Lund says the issue will eventually go before voters…possibly in the year 2010.
