Perhaps we aren’t bidding for a future Olympics, but Sacramento is still booking some serious athletic competitions. The lineup over the next few years includes the NCAA women’s volleyball championship, the Amgen Tour of California bike race, a women’s rowing championship and an International Polynesian canoe race. The region will also see basketball and track and field competitions. Local tourism officials estimate the events could bring at least $14 million to town. And that just covers direct spending by athletes and spectators. Sacramento County is still courting two additional athletic events and the National Association of Sports Commissions convention.
