Call it the sprint at the very end of a marathon.  After years of talking, dreaming and planning, the city and the developer are rushing the Railyards through the approval process – just in time to qualify for a big chunk of state funds.

Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo says she’s worked on the project since 1990.

“So I don’t think that we’re actually rushing it through.  But we do want to make sure that we look very closely at the criteria for state funding that we’d be eligible for and make sure that we’re meeting that criteria.  And if that includes getting things done in certain time frames, we’ll do our best to make that happen.”

But that means some of the most important planning documents – like the Railyards specific plan, design guidelines and final environmental impact report – were released less than two weeks ago.

And the City Council is expected to give the Railyards its final approval by the end of the year.
