Placer County officials want to build a small power plant in Tahoe City that would supply electricity to a proposed sheriff’s substation. Sierra Pacific Power, the electric utility serving that area, would receive any excess power. The proposed plant could produce enough electricity for more than 1,000 homes. Wood waste from the area already goes to other biomass power plants outside Tahoe, under other county contracts. In the wake of the Angora fire, which burned more than 250 homes near the Lake, the county hopes this will aid removal of brush and wood that create hazardous conditions.
